Hello,
I'm posting this for the following reasons:
- If this sounds like a problem your having, maybe my experience will help solve your problem
- This is why coder profile has not had an update for a while, and why v2 has gone way past it's due date of early january 2009
- Also why i have not really be around the forums much or posted anything new on my profile
- Why this site has not really grown much since christmas (though saying that, it's not declined either in regards to traffic so a thanks need to go to our loyal members)
Introduction
I'll just introduce myself and give you an all round view of my lifestyle for those who do not know me.
I'm 21 years old and live a bit of a mixed lifestyle. In the summer time i tend to be out and about running, lifting weights, tennis, etc but when it comes to the winter i don't like the cold. So i tend to sit at my computer, read books and watch tv. My work involves sitting at a computer for 8 hours a day and in the summer we tend to play tennis on our breaks. I work tuesday to friday, and see my g/f twice a week (so no computers).
Early January 09
The first symptom appeared in my right elbow when i couldn't straighten it as it felt like it was locked and if i went any further something would crack in my elbow. If i had my palm facing upwards it would be hard to straighten it especially with any weight on my hands. So i rested it and didn't lift anything heavy and haven't done weight training since (except for typing). I just thought it was something like tennis/golfers elbow but it didn't seam to go.
The second symptom shortly after was when i started typing my knuckles started to swell up and my forearms started to hurt. This was worse on my right hand, but was also happening on my left hand a little. The swelling and pain seemed to clear up over night when i stopped typing but my elbow continued to hurt. Over the weekends i didn't touch a computer and my hands would feel better. When i went back to work all the problems in my hands would come back within a day or two.
This wen't on, gradually getting worse and had started taking ginger root extract to help take the inflammation down and garlic because I didn't want to get ill as well!
Early February 09
I went to see a physio (on the monday) and he massaged my elbow, shoulder, and neck. The problem in my arm seemed to clear up instantly the same with my hands. I felt like everything was ok now. Went back to work the next day, tuesday went ok, wednesday i could feel something coming back, thursday almost back to how i was pain wise, friday back to being in pain again.
Mid February 09
I found a stretch that when i held it for 30 seconds my elbow went back to normal. I did this 4 or 5 times every day untill eventually my elbow felt much better. My hands were sort of ok but still hurt to type.
Late February 09
I lifted some uPVC and my right bicept felt like i had lifted a house, my bicep hurt to touch, my forearms ached, and my elbow hurt again and couldn't straighten it just like how the whole thing started before. My left hand and forearm also hurt. My right inner forearm also became numb!
1st March 09
Went back to the physio and he massaged my shoulders and neck and said I should move more because he found a load of scar tissue etc but this time it had little effect. I recently took a week off work because the pain in my hands got so bad and went for long walks (hour or so each time), started running every other day for 15 mins. The walks seemed to help my elbow and my shoulders no longer crunch when I move them in circles, but my hands are still sore at the joints and the forearms making typing painful.
I thought this problem was just in my hands and was maybe a little tendinitis or something related to the typing and weights etc... however after a few weeks of being more active i have felt the same kind of "pain" that lingers in my forearms and hands also in the lower part of my leg mainly on the top of my foot towards the big toe and in the muscles opposite my calf. I remember a while back that my big toe on my right foot sometimes hurts a little for no reason and then goes shortly after appearing. Right now while typing this at my desk my right forearm is hurting and that same pain is in my right leg opposite my calf and my knuckles are turning red and hurting.
I'm doing short runs (15 mins) but compared to a few years ago i used to run miles and miles (example 4 miles to work each day), play football, lift weights a lot more than i do now, tae kwon do, etc and have none of these kind of pains afterwards. The same pain also seem to be appearing all over the place now in the lower parts of my limbs. My abdomen however appears to be fine, no problems at all in my shoulder, neck, back, etc. I'm also drinking a lot more water now in the hope it helps.
3rd March 09
It is my first day back at work after 7 days of not typing and already today my hands are hurting (backs of hands, and joints) after typing this and my elbow has seized up again. Over 2 months from when it all started and it appears to be spreading and not getting better. Since the 1st of March I have now stopped taking the 3 supplements (ginger root, garlic, glucosamine and chondroitin) in case those are doing anything but am quickly running out of ideas to help.
5th March 09
Since i've stopped taking those 3 supplements the symptoms have started clearing up. I can type again now and there are the odd pains in my forearm and the odd finger hurts for a few mins but after a little rest it's good to go again. I'm convinced it was something to do with the “chondroitin”.
What Now?
I'm pretty sure i've found the problem (that supplement i was taking) and everything is now getting better. I think this will all clear up in 2 weeks time at this rate in which case i will then be able to resume my work on this site!!! AT LONG LAST!!!
Kind regards,
Scott
P.S. Also the corners of my lips started to repeatedly crack and as one side cleared up, the other side would crack and start all over again. This started about 2 or 3 weeks ago, but is now clearing up.
P.P.S. I started taking glucosamine and chondroitin supplements in the hope it may help ease the pain in my hands etc but I can not remember if I started taking it before or after this problem started.
