2009 - New major features
News, Posted 3.5 Years Ago, Applies to v2
Hi ya guys,

Over the past couple of weeks i have taken a break from coder profile... mainly because i sprained my elbow and forearm or something. My forearms still not 100% as it still hurts while i type. But at least i can now properly straighten my arm and stuff. Instead... i have not just sat back at watched tv or played games. I've finished reading about 4 programming/business books including a huge Ubuntu book (almost 1000 pages). very good book. I've also been able to get a better view on Coder Profile ( i think i really needed that break to widen my dev vision of CP).

So... what's next for CP.... basically... 2 major updates this year... and then i'm going to promote it.

v2 will be released a week or two after my forearms better and i can get back to my usual typing habits. 75% of the v2 update is completed. Then the first major release will be include a few things like:
  • Forum tweaks (ability to quote multiple posts, notifications to multiple quote authors, etc)
  • Some updates on the WYSIWYG editor (such as the ability to use tabs, and not have them converted to spaces)
  • A new back end for the notification system allowing more informative notifications, sub filters (for example filter by the discussion forum, then if you want, just replies)
  • A new back end for the way you add applications to your profiles. In the future i could easily add the ability for you to rename the applications when they are shown on your profiles for example... if you don't like the app name of "blog" on your profile... you could change it to "journals" etc... i will only be utilising the basics of the new back end code... but the potential is much more than what you will initially see.
  • New components that are added all over the site including a new review system where you can type in your review of something and rate it by selecting stars (1 to 5), a new commenting system that allows for branched replies, branch notifications, AJAX display of branches, etc, and so on...
  • A new following and following system will allow you to keep up to date with the latest profile updates of your favourite coders
  • A new profile rank that determine how good a programmers profile is and you guys all help to decide on who the top programmers are. It's based on your total followers + the quality of your profiles content.... so it's actually quite a good indication.
  • A new skills application allows you to add an unlimited amount of skills to say a language or area of interest. There's also more selectable skills such as IDEs and compilers. Meaning you can find other coders who use the same compilers or IDE as yourself (not really vital, but it's still something i enjoy knowing about coders).
  • New profile panels show your profile rank, total followers, and stuff like that.
  • You will have the ability to categorise everything on your profile via custom categories you want. You can nest them up to 80 levels (if i remember correctly - though string size is the limiting factor, not levels) and people can browse the content on your profile via a dynamic calendar (click a date and it instantly shows whats been posted on that day). The results are basically a more browse-able profile for your visitors ;-)
  • A profile feed allows visitors to your profile that don't want to become your follower but still want to know of updates to your profile can still subscribe to your profile. Also, the feed allows for people who stumble upon your profile to see instantly what's been happening on your profile.
  • A new personal messaging system includes suggested usernames (like how gmail auto completes a contact if you have sent them an email in the past) and you can receive unlimited emails since they are now pruned on a timed basis. More enhanced spam control has also been added.
  • And a few other things that i can't think of right now...
Then the next major update will include 5 new/enhanced applications
  • Book Shelf - Allowing you to add books you own and post a review to them. You can then browse the CP library and find the most popular books, talk to owners of books, find related books, recommended books, etc
  • Web Directory - Simply create your own web directory and allow commenting on each entry (I'm forever finding coding sites i want to checkout later but forget the link). You will also be able to see are the most popular coding sites, etc
  • Blogs - Just a bog standard blog similar to the functionality of a wordpress blog (categories, labels, inserting images, etc)
  • Articles - More formal than blogs asking for an introduction, intended audience, sources, revisions, etc...
  • Tutorials - Allows for multiple pages, an introduction is required, ability to post reviews on a tutorial, etc
Thats what will be finished in the update after v2... which to be honest... i could probably finish in a month since most of the hard work will already be done (code re-use is a god send) thanks to the framework enhancements added in v2.

Then the next update are two new applications
  • Code Snippets - You must paste the snippet in a textarea and then people can review it, comment on it, and post child codes (codes based on the parent snippet) to extend the snippet. No screen shots or file attachments will be allowed (since there more projects then)
  • Projects - Full blown applications... you enable the sections you want per source code such as "screen shots", "attachments", "binaries", "suggestions", "bug tracker", "documentation", "forum", "support desk", and so on... You will not be able to paste source codes, instead you must upload the source codes as a archive.
This selection will be the core applications i add this year... and i will focus on perfecting them... and getting ready to promote coder profile where i aim to get 5,000 coders before i continue main stream development again (obviously i will do bug fixes etc all the time) :-)

Kind regards,
Scott
