Turbo Delphi Explorer allows for applications to be created for free in the same manner as with the shareware Delphi IDE. Delphi is overall a good RAD language, certainly stronger and more stable than Visual Basic, but not as suitable for resource demanding projects as C/C++.
I wouldn't say Delphi was that old compared to VB... to be fair... they are both still in development! Though Delphi is now developed by CodeGear.
Delphi 2005 is really good... the only thing i couldnt stand was the syntax. If i didn't know so many braced languages like PHP, JavaScript, etc... then i would have found it much easier to use Delphi.
Also, delphi's executables are only large because they require 0 dependences! Unlike VB and even so, they can be stripped down if you simple use less includes.
And speed is not a problem either - the executables speed is comparable to executables created in C++ (possibly even C).
I even created a program in Delphi & an exact clone (of the algorithm) in VB6 to compare!
the braces and colons etc in a programming language are like grammer in a spoken language... hence when its written down its easier to read and work with.
God people don't believe how helpful good indenting is! I MUST indent mine else i hate reading the code.

I think VB is a very nice language, unfortunately it's been tarnished because of its past and the fact it contains the word BASIC in it - which really doesn't mean it's "basic" at all.
Delphi i just couldn't get used to the syntax but the architecture of the language was very good.
