I was reading a blog article today and it really got me thinking again about rating systems and how some people really over engineer them to the point where they aren't as simple as they should be. What am I talking about with all this over engineering business? Well, for example, how about when a website lets you choose half stars as a rating. This comes down to the fact that, as a reader, the website is making it harder for you to choose a simple rating. What is the difference between 3 and 3.5 stars? Nothing really. It makes it even worse when a website is doing it out of 10 stars and lets you choose a half star. Who needs it and who cares? Probably no one. Another really big mess in star ratings is when there is no automatic filling of stars at all and instead lets you pick a random filling of stars. This is a cool effect, but makes it over engineered.

Do you all feel the same way as I do, or am I just weird?

Given this point, who else feels like star rating systems are archaic and a better system should be put in place anyways? 5 stars doesn't mean much when it comes to compiling data about it and would mean more if you substituted the star/made a star equal to something, such a phrase like "I liked this" or "I would recommend this/share this", much like Netflix does.

Like/dislike system is what I think is the best for blogs (blogposts)

Stars are okay, but I hate half stars and all that extra bull... I also like being able to give something no stars at all (0 stars)

You could have a system with several strings like "Great" "Informative" etc and let users choose from them (either checkboxes, several, or radio buttons, single choice) and then list the percent of people who thought what, just an idea

I don't know about the no-star option as a single star is usually the "I hate it" option.
