I'm trying to get some kind of standard system in place for the applications. You see the problem at the moment is if you disable the friends application - people can still send you friend invites. If you disable the custom emoticons application, you can still use custom emoticons, the forum doesn't follow the same rule as all the other applications in that each application allows you directly to add content from your account home page to your profile. With the forum you have to go to the forum network to add content (so basically it's the wrong way around).
Here's what i propose.
Applications - You enable / disable them to add or remove functionality from your profile.
Networks - All the individual applications content made sortable from all the profiles content.
And to help make all the applications the same how about.
1. Remove the discussion forum application (since blogs will replace the forum on your profile) which will no longer show your forum posts on your profile. You will however be able to manage all your posts still from within the forum itself (pages will filter out just your posts so no functionality or content will be lost).
2. Move the forum to the home page and have it as a site section instead of an application (same place the chat room, etc would go).
3. Referrals and custom emoticons no longer an "application". They will be available to everyone and will not be disabled.
4. Fans can not be disabled because fans will be the backbone of the profiles because they act as a subscribers list for profiles (will do soon).
5. Delete the to do lists application (sorry but it's just not coder specific enough and it will be resurrected in the project management application)
6. Delete the code pin board (too similar to source codes, whats left to post in the pin board is a load of rubbish that don't want to go on profiles anyway)
7. Adjust the friends application so that if it is disabled, people simply can not send you a friend invite. By default it will be disabled.
I always believe that "exceptions" to any standard or rule add exponential complications.
If i decided to add a forums application - it would be your very own forum on your profile that YOU control. Not a forum that I control.
Anything i control, will be part of the "site" section such as the development blog, news, chat room, discussion forum, etc.
I think the "sections" part will become MUCH clearer when i upload v1.45 which has just 4 sections:
