Ways to fix a scratched optical disk (cd, dvd)
for free, of course!

We all know it. We've all of us lived it. Imagine this scenario: You have discovered an exploit at one program for Win32. You put the disk inside the driver. And, then, an error dialog appears. If you are still calm, you wish to have your disk as new. Well, you pick the disk from the driver and you discover some scratches.
HOW TO REPAIR IT? WELL HERE ARE SOME WAYS I've TESTED (remember: anything you do it's your own responsibility!)

Way no 0:
QUOTE:  Remove Scroll Bars
(QUOTED FROM http://www.wikihow.com/Fix-a-Scratched-CD)
* Clean the disc. Even if a CD isn't actually scratched or scuffed, dust, oil, and other surface contaminants can prevent it from playing properly. Thus cleaning the disc should always be your first move.
  • Run warm water over the damaged disc to remove dust.
  • If there is stubborn dirt or grease on the disc, gently rub it with your finger while you are washing it, and use a gentle detergent or liquid soap (with the water) or rubbing alcohol (in place of water). Any time you rub or wipe a CD, you should do so by starting at or near the center of the disc and rubbing straight outward toward the edge to prevent further scratching.
  • Shake the water off and let the disc air-dry (do not dry it with a towel or cloth, and don't sun-dry it either).
* Try to play the disc. Many times a good cleaning is all that is needed. If, however, problems persist after cleaning, try to play the disc in a different CD player. Some players handle scratches better than others; computer CD drives tend to be best.
If this doesn't work, try to polish the disk:
1st way: If you have a lightly scratched CD, you can use toothpaste.
Just put some toothpaste on the scratch and stretch it out with your fingers.

ATTENTION: FOR THE FOLLOWING WAYS YOU MUST WEAR GLOVES.
READ EVERY PRODUCT YOU TOUCH FOR WARNINGS!!!

2nd way: BRASSO. Yes, BRASSO(TM) is a good way to re-surface the disc. Just throw some BRASSO on the disc and rub in circular motion the disc with cotton.

If you want to see how it works, visit this webpage: http://users.fulladsl.be/spb2267/restorecd/restorecd.htm

3rd way: Put Car Wax or Vasoline on the cd and rub it in. Then wipe it off. Some web pages say that you must let it dry, but I washed it. and its supposed to fix the scratches... This tric also (supposedly) works on scratches on car windows, etc.

4th way: Take a highlighter. [quote]
Color the whole CD with the highlighter. When its all yellow let it start to dry just a little, but not completely. Take your towel and wipe it a lot. It will take a while for the whole of it to come off. Afterwards the CD has a sort of sheen make sure there is no film, let it dry a bit, pop it back in, and you'll notice where the CD wouldn't stop skipping before it will keep going. [quote]

I have to say that I haven't tested this (4th) way (you know the one with the highlighter).

CLOSING:
Here I wrote all the available free solutions for make the CDs work. I told you, I've tested most of them on a FS9 (Flight Simulator 2004) CD. But if ANYTHING happens on your CDs (I say IF), then you are responsible, not me.

THANKS TO:
I would like to thank ROHITAB for showing my first serious tutorial. Also I want to thank my father for giving me the required stuff (brasso etc.).

I actually could take a CD, burn some images on it, then scratch it and try to
recover, just for fun...
