Telnet - A Tutorial for Beginners
Networking
Telnet

Telnet stands for the Telecommunications Network. It is a network protocol that can be used over wide or local area networks (WAN / LAN). It was developed in 1969 and is now outdated. Deemed an insecure protocol to use, not many telnet servers still exists. Telnet can be run and accessed from just about any platform available (Windows, Linux, Mac, etc). A user could telnet into a server, sign on, and control the entire system remotely with the use of operating system commands such as MS-DOS or Linux Kernel commands.

So lets try to telnet into a system and watch star wars.

First we will have to down load a telnet client. A client is just a piece of software that allows us to use telnet and easily access the features of the telnet protocol.

Go to ( http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/download.html )
And download the client to your desktop.

Then double click on the file to open it.

In the Host Name Box type ( towel.blinkenlights.nl )

Next type ( 23 ) for the port # or just click ( telnet ) under ‘connection type’

Now press Open

Tada!

These people set up there telnet server to display a star wars movie made in ASCII. You can do a lot more with telnet. Spoof e-mail, access computer systems remotely, and host a verity of others apps.

So ever wanted to check you e-mail client when your on vacation? How about deleting the porno on your desktop before your dad see’s it? From school! Well here is how to set up your own telnet server on your home computer. Remember: even thought you are password protected, running a telnet server is running a risk as well.

First, in order to do anything on the remote computer you must know how to use the command prompt or Terminal for the operating system the server is running. If you are running a version of Linux then Google ( Bash Commands ). If you are running a version of Windows then Google ( MS-DOS Commands ).

Next go to ( http://www.whatismyip.com/ ) and copy your IP address to a text document and save it to your desktop for later reference.

Now go to ( http://www.kpym.com/2/kpym/download.htm )
And download the installer.

Then double click the installer and follow the wizard.

Wow that was easy! Now go to another computer and open up putty. Type in your IP and set the port # to 23.

Click Open and wait for the log in prompt. Type in your user name and password for your computer and …

TaDa!!! A command prompt, if you know how to use your commands, controlling your computer will be easy.

Well now you can explore the world of the telnet protocol. Even old and out dated, it can still be fun to learn.

If you find any errors please PM me and I will be sure to make corrections.
