| I've played with Python, Perl, and Visual Basic, mostly simple things. I also have experience shell scripting in bash and zsh. |

Other software, and more information about my selected software.
|
| I have two computers, one running MacOS and the other running Gentoo GNU/Linux. I use Vim for almost everything text related. When compiling C/C++ I prefer to use the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC). For graphics editing, I use Inkscape for vector graphics and the GIMP for raster graphics. |

What are your favorite coding books? I don't own many coding books; a copy of the C Programming Language by Kernighan and Ritchie, and I think I have a Scheme language reference somewhere. With the Internet, anything I could want to know has already been written in a dozen articles and blogs. Most languages have their specifications online or as PDF. I'd be an idiot not to take advantage of that.
How did you learn how to write code? My father gave me a copy of GW-BASIC when I was a kid and showed me some code. Things took off from there. I eventually got a Geocities website and learned HTML and JavaScript. In high school I took two courses in computer science, and they taught in Java. In college, the language was C++. I feel that once someone learns how to program, they can pick up new languages pretty easily. At that point, it's just learning the syntax.
What is your favorite IDE? I don't usually use an IDE. Every computer I work on has a copy of Vim installed. It gives me syntax highlighting, auto-indentation, and doesn't have icons and toolbars taking up space. I actually prefer compiling on the command line.
Do you write code as a hobby, or because you have to for work? Why not both? I have a job programming because I love programming.
