Had a problem since january with my hands... so all i've done is read! I also purchased a dedicated laptop for Ubuntu to use :-)
Anyway, in regards to your hostname problem. Post your problem, along with a copy of your /etc/hosts file and the /etc/hostname file (put it inside [code] tags).
You may also get away with using the terminal command: hostname but you'l have to run: man hostname
to see what switches it has etc.
Anyway about getting a domain name linked to your computer. You need to setup a DNS (domain name server) on your computer, then forward the domain name to your DNS server, the DNS server then must resolve the domain name to your computers IP to which apache (or any other web server) needs to be running on port 80. However, if you don't have a static IP each time you reconnect to the net you will have to change some settings each time (to update the new IP).
Anyway, best to ask those kind of questions in the forums since BBcode is enabled and many other coders browse them and can answer your questions.
Kind regards,
Scott

My knowledge is quite up to scratch now i would say. Read two books, 1000 pages each, plus another 300/400 page book on ubuntu tips, tricks, hacks, etc.
I understand how to shell script now, how to do most things via the shell such as update packages, pipe commands, etc.
As well as network it, set it up as a server, run perl, python, sort out permissions, configure the kernal firewall, run modes (like single user mode for admin work, etc) and so on.
The parts i know little about are how to actually program something specifically for linux (not scripts like perl, php, etc... something like C++ i mean) and i don't know much in depth stuff about linux itself. I'm comfortable with Ubuntu though and can actually do more now on Ubuntu than i know how to do on windows! (Ubuntu just seems to make more sense than windows even though i've been using windows for almost 10 years!).
Kind regards,
Scott
P.S. If you reply by leaving me a comment on my profile, i will get notified of your reply. This problem is fixed in coder profile v2.

Hello,
How long you been using Ubuntu for? I've read two huge books about it and using it now. I love it! Been using it for about 3 months now.
You learnt it properly or just from messing around on it?
Kind regards,
Scott
